Thousands of people gathered in cities across Israel and the Palestinian territories on Thursday for vigils and protests in the wake of a deadly airstrike that killed five children in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military said it had targeted a Hamas tunnel network, but the strike also hit a civilian home, killing the children and injuring several others.

In Tel Aviv, thousands of people gathered in Rabin Square to protest the war and call for peace. The protesters held signs that read “Stop the killing” and “Children are not targets.”

“We are here tonight to say that we will not stand for this violence anymore,” said one speaker at the protest. “We want peace, and we will not stop fighting until we get it.”

In Gaza, thousands of people gathered at the Al-Omari Mosque for a vigil for the five children who were killed. The mourners held candles and wept as they prayed for the children’s souls.

“These children were the future of Palestine,” said one mourner. “Now they are gone. How can we ever forgive the Israelis for this?”

The airstrike was the latest in a series of deadly attacks between Israel and Hamas. The two sides have been engaged in a fierce conflict since May, with hundreds of people killed on both sides.

The international community has called for a ceasefire, but the two sides have so far been unable to agree to a truce.

The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to meet on Friday to discuss the situation in the Middle East. The meeting is expected to be tense, as the US has threatened to veto any resolution that condemns Israel.

The Israel-Hamas war has caused a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The United Nations estimates that more than 1 million people have been displaced from their homes and that more than 50% of the population is food insecure.

The international community has pledged millions of dollars in aid to the Gaza Strip, but the UN says that more is needed to address the humanitarian crisis.
