Hurricane Bonnie has strengthened to a Category 2 storm as it continues to move west-northwest over the Pacific Ocean. The storm is currently located about 1,100 miles southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.

Bonnie is expected to continue to strengthen in the next few days and could become a Category 3 storm by the time it makes landfall in Mexico on Saturday. The storm is forecast to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of Mexico, including the states of Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, and Sonora.

The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning for the southern coast of Baja California Sur from Punta Abreojos to Los Barriles. A tropical storm warning is in effect for the Baja California peninsula from Punta Eugenia to Punta Abreojos, and for the coast of mainland Mexico from Puerto San Carlos to La Paz.

Residents in the warning areas are urged to take precautions and to follow the instructions of local officials.

Bonnie is the second hurricane of the 2023 Pacific hurricane season. The first hurricane, Agatha, made landfall in Mexico on May 30 as a Category 2 storm. Agatha was the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Mexico in May since record-keeping began in 1949.

The 2023 Pacific hurricane season is expected to be an active one, with 14 to 21 named storms, including 7 to 10 hurricanes. Of those hurricanes, 3 to 5 could be major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).
