A Republican lawmaker is calling on former President Donald Trump to drop out of the 2024 GOP presidential race, saying he will lose to President Joe Biden.
Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, who is one of two Republicans on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, said in an interview with CNN on Sunday that Trump is “too divisive” and “too toxic” to win the presidency again.
“I think he would lose to Joe Biden,” Kinzinger said. “I think he would lose to any Democrat who ran against him.”
Kinzinger is the latest Republican to break with Trump. In recent months, a number of GOP lawmakers have said they would not support Trump if he runs for president again.
Trump has not yet announced whether he will run in 2024, but he has hinted that he is considering it. He has continued to hold rallies and fundraisers, and he has raised millions of dollars for his political action committee.
A recent poll found that Trump would lose to Biden in a hypothetical rematch. The poll, conducted by the Pew Research Center, found that 44% of Americans would vote for Biden if he ran against Trump, while 39% would vote for Trump.

Kinzinger said he believes that Trump is “a threat to democracy” and that he should not be allowed to run for president again.
“I think he’s a danger to our country,” Kinzinger said. “I think he’s a danger to our democracy.”
It remains to be seen whether Trump will heed Kinzinger’s advice. But the fact that a growing number of Republicans are breaking with him could make it more difficult for him to win the GOP nomination in 2024.
