Islamabad, August 5, 2023 – Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested on Saturday after he was sentenced to three years in jail in a corruption case.

An Islamabad trial court found Khan guilty of illegally selling gifts he received from foreign dignitaries during his term as prime minister. The gifts included watches, bracelets, and necklaces worth more than 140 million Pakistani rupees ($635,000).

Khan has denied any wrongdoing and his legal team said they would be filing an immediate appeal.

The arrest comes just days after Khan was ousted from office in a no-confidence motion. The motion was supported by a coalition of opposition parties, who accused Khan of mismanaging the economy and of being involved in corruption.

Khan’s arrest has sparked protests by his supporters, who have accused the government of political victimization.
